Mastering the Job Interview Process.

For young mining professionals, entering the industry is both exciting and challenging. One of the key steps in securing your dream role is acing the interview.

The process is more than just answering questions. It’s about showcasing your knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm for the role. Here’s a practical guide to help you stand out and make the best first impression.

Step 1: Research

Know the Company & Team

Before stepping into an interview, it is important to learn as much about the company and role. Check out their website, review their annual reports, announcements, and social media.

Utilise LinkedIn to see if you share any connections with the company's employees and gather as much data as possible about the team that will be interviewing you.

The more facts and figures you can get your hands on, the better. It shows that you are interested in the company and the opportunity.

Know the Job

Thoroughly read through the role brief and advertisements. Pay close attention to the skills and qualifications highlighted, as well as the key outcomes expected from the role. A good interview will design questions to assess your fit against these criteria.

By understanding the company’s mission and expectations, you'll be better equipped to explain how your background and values align with the role.

Step 2: Prepare

Anticipate Questions

Think about the kinds of questions you'll be asked and prepare your responses. Go over a list of common interview questions and frame your answers in a way that highlights your past experiences and achievements. Reflect on the challenges you’ve faced and how those experiences position you to succeed in the role you're applying for.

Prepare Your Own Questions

An interview is also your opportunity to learn more about the company and prepare questions that you would like answers to. In a great interview, you won't do most of the talking. You'll do a good chunk of listening because you have asked such great questions. Remember the best answers demonstrate that you understand the company and show that you are a good fit for the job.

Step 3: The Interview Day

First Impressions Matter

You only have 30 seconds to make a strong first impression, so make them count.

Arrive on time, dress appropriately for the company culture (erring on the side of formality if unsure), and engage with a positive, enthusiastic attitude. Smile, make eye contact, and be clear and concise with your answers. Aim to keep your responses to around 1-2 minutes.

For Phone/Virtual Interviews

If your interview is over the phone or via video, ensure you’re in a quiet environment with good reception. Keep your CV handy, smile (it will change the tone of your voice), and speak clearly and at a steady pace. Avoid any distractions like gum or food during the call.

Above all, show your preparation, interest, and professionalism throughout the process. This shows that you are serious about the opportunity whilst leaving a lasting impression.
